The State Department has approved a purchase request from India for MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes all up rounds and related non-major defense equipment worth approximately $175 million.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Monday the proposed foreign military sale involves the acquisition of 53 MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedo all up rounds along with non-major defense equipment such as Recoverable Exercise Torpedoes, air launch accessories, classified and unclassified torpedo spare parts, torpedo containers, torpedo support equipment and tools and torpedo support services.
Under the possible FMS, the South Asian nation will also acquire classified and unclassified books and other publications, along with other forms of technical assistance, including technical support, technical program management, infrastructure support, test equipment sustainment, exercise firing assistance, contract management and initial follow-on-technical support and in-country torpedo training.
India intends to strengthen its national defense by integrating the MK 54 MOD 0 Lightweight Torpedoes into its navy’s stockpile of anti-submarine weapons for its MH-60R helicopter fleet.
Congress was notified by the DSCA about the potential sale Monday.
