Matt Jones, president and CEO of Sigma Defense Systems, said the U.S. military procurement process needs reform to help ensure warfighter readiness and save taxpayer dollars.
In an article published Thursday in Government Technology Insider, Jones wrote that medium-sized government contractors need to play a key role in reforming the government acquisition process by identifying and supporting small companies and their innovations.
“Medium-sized companies play a critical role in bridging the gap between innovation and scale, providing the necessary flexibility and capacity to integrate new technologies into broader applications,” Jones noted.
“Medium-sized companies have managed to jump the scale hurdle, at least enough to qualify for contracts in their own right rather than relying on major primes,” he added.
The Sigma Defense chief executive also highlighted the role of procurement or program offices within the Department of Defense in advancing military acquisition reform.
“The DOD’s procurement offices could play a much bigger role in this, as well, by enlisting mid-sized contractors to assist the small players in transitioning their innovative solutions,” Jones stated.
