Mark Peters, executive vice president for national laboratory management and operations at Battelle, was appointed president and CEO of MITRE, effective Sept. 3.
He will succeed Jason Providakes, who is retiring after over 35 years of service at MITRE, the organization said Thursday.
Peters will bring to MITRE decades-long leadership experience as well as expertise in government and research and development areas. In his most recent role at Battelle, he is responsible for governance and oversight of Department of Energy and Department of Homeland Security national laboratories.
Prior to joining Battelle, Peters served as director of the Idaho National Laboratory for over five years. Previously, he worked at Argonne National Lab for more than a decade and, before that, at Los Alamos National Lab for about six years.
“He will lead our nearly 10,000-strong MITRE team to accelerate innovation and enhance creative problem solving on a range of technology challenges, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, transportation safety, public health and national defense,” said Rodney Slater, chairman of MITRE’s board of trustees.
Peters was also honored as an American Nuclear Society fellow in 2015 and was elected as a National Academy of Engineering member in 2021.
“Mark has a clear record of success building collaborative partnerships with industry, academia, and other partners,” said Providakes. “Because of that, he will continue to advance MITRE’s technical expertise and unbiased outlook across government.”
Providakes and Sue Gordon, vice chair of MITRE’s board of trustees and a previous Wash100 Award recipient, are hosting a townhall as part of the executive move, ExecutiveBiz has learned.
