Verizon’s public sector business is partnering with various divisions of the Department of Veterans Affairs to help provide broadband internet and telehealth services to veterans residing in rural and remote locations.
The project is the focus of a cooperative research and development agreement signed by Verizon Public Sector with the Veterans Health Administration, the company announced Tuesday.
The initiative is led by VHA Innovation Ecosystem’s National Center for Collaborative Healthcare Innovation, which has commenced its activities at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System in California.
Verizon is lending its network-as-a-service architecture to boost connectivity for veterans through 4G and 5G wireless or low Earth orbit satellite networks. The enhanced connection will enable VHA to carry out telehealth and wellness programs to the former servicemen despite their distance.
“The objective of this collaboration between Verizon Public Sector and the VA is to help bridge the Digital Divide for our nation’s veterans,” said Maggie Hallbach, senior vice president of Verizon Public Sector and Wash100 winner. “This important partnership and the improved broadband internet availability it will help provide is aimed at ensuring Veterans, regardless of where they live, have access to the widest possible array of health and wellness options.”
