The State Department is warning U.S. citizens traveling anywhere in the world “to exercise increased caution”.
In an Oct. 23 travel advisory, the department called for vigilance on the part of U.S. citizens when visiting locations frequented by tourists and recommended that they enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.
STEP registrants would benefit from receiving information and alerts. They would also be located more easily in the event of an emergency.
The State Department also advised travelers to monitor its social media accounts.
The agency issued the advisory in light of what it described as “increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests”.
