DOE Picks 5 Teams to Develop Aviation Contrail Predictive Tools; Evelyn Wang Quoted

The Department of Energy has selected five teams that will receive funding to further develop their technology platforms and tools designed to mitigate aviation emissions.

The teams will get $10 million in funding through the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy’s exploratory topic titled Predictive Real-time Emissions Technologies Reducing Aircraft Induced Lines in the Sky or PRE-TRAILS to develop their aviation contrail predictive tools, ARPA-E said Tuesday.

ARPA-E said it expects the predictive systems and diagnostics to be developed through PRE-TRAILS to enable pilots and ground controllers to predict whether an aircraft is likely to generate persistent clouds called aircraft-induced cirrus.

The research teams and their corresponding awards are listed below:

  • Boeing – $2.49 million
  • GE Research – $1.5 million
  • Northrop Grumman – $2.49 million
  • RTX’s technologies research center – $2.5 million
  • Universities Space Research Association – $1 million

It’s going to take everyone – including the aviation industry – working together to reach our nation’s net-zero goals,” said ARPA-E Director Evelyn Wang.

These projects will play a critical role in deepening our understanding of water emissions from aircraft jet engines, and identifying solutions to lower these emissions,” Wang added.
