A subsidiary of Canadian mining company Graphite One has received a $37.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to accelerate a feasibility study for domestic battery material production.

DOD awarded Defense Production Act Title III funds to support Graphite One (Alaska) Inc.’s proposal to create a supply chain for anode materials needed to make electronic vehicle and alternative energy batteries, G1 said Monday.

The company will inject $37.5 million into the Graphite Creek Project-related study as part of its technology investment agreement with the department.

G1 founder and CEO Anthony Huston noted the company aims “to build a 100% U.S.-based advanced graphite supply chain – from mining to refining to recycling.”

Under its project, G1 envisions mining the material from a company-operated property on the Seward Peninsula in Alaska and establishing a co-located battery node factory and recycling facility- in Washington state.

The Graphite Creek Project is located approximately 35 miles north of Alaskan city Nome and reported by the U.S. Geological Survey as the country’s largest known flake graphite resource.

Laura Taylor-Kale, assistant secretary for industrial policy at DOD, said the agreement with Graphite One (Alaska) seeks to advance the department’s battery material supply strategy.
