Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has booked a potential five-year, $46.7 million contract to test thermal protection materials in submarine ballistic missile re-entry systems for the U.S. Navy.
An initial $8.6 million award from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division calls for thermomechanical and aerothermal ground tests via a simulated environment, the company said Monday.
Under the cost-plus-fixed-fee contract, Kratos will be responsible for sample preparation, instrumentation, data collection and testing of the thermal protection materials at a temperature of up to 5,500 degrees Fahrenheit.
“Our division has a long and valued relationship with the Navy supporting research rocket and ballistic missile target programs,” said Dave Carter, president of Kratos’ defense and rocket support services division.
Work will be performed at the Kratos SRE subsidiary in Birmingham, Alabama.
