Watch: ECS President John Heneghan Reveals Hurdles in AI Implementation - top government contractors - best government contracting event

As artificial intelligence continues to shape the federal landscape, a few key hurdles are standing in the way of full-scale adoption and implementation of the advanced technology.

In a new video interview, ECS President John Heneghan detailed some of the main obstacles federal and industry leaders are encountering as they pursue AI for a wide range of mission applications.

“The first challenge is really the sheer volume of data that’s generated. We are immersed every day in more and more data — I saw a recent estimate that’s at 2.5 quintillion bytes of data a day,” the 2023 Wash100 Award winner told Executive Mosaic.

“In order to handle complex scenarios in which you use AI, you really need to have a whole scaffolding behind it, the right infrastructure, the right data management techniques and model development. It also requires technology integration with that domain knowledge,” Heneghan added.

To combat this issue, ECS embeds AI/ML engineers and data professionals with the users to ensure mission outcomes and provide its customers with the expertise needed for specific scenarios.

Another challenge Heneghan outlined is that too often, the data needed to build and train AI algorithms is siloed in disparate systems and from different vendors. To solve this, Heneghan proposed building multiple data pipelines that can get data from multiple locations to where it needs to be for optimal performance.
