Government agencies should future-proof their information technology systems starting at the design stage to make them resilient against evolving threats from the exploitation of quantum computers, according to John Taibi, vice president of business development at Cambridge Consultants.
In an opinion piece published Tuesday, Taibi emphasized the need to build a trustworthy cyber-physical system and not simply rely on autonomous technologies for cybersecurity.
Agencies should equip their critical embedded devices with post-quantum security algorithms. He added that hardware that will be used for at least 10 years need to be designed with memory and storage chips that can accommodate post-quantum cryptography algorithms.
In addition, Taibie underscored that technology leaders within federal departments should also ensure that their devices are flexible to switching underlying encryption methods. New algorithms are increasingly becoming a common element in computer designs, and they can take advantage of the lowering cost of such resources, he noted.
