Allen Badeau, chief technology officer at Empower AI, said the Department of Defense should consider security, education and standardized authority to operate as it works on its strategy for artificial intelligence adoption.
Badeau wrote in an article published in the January edition of COTS Journal that DOD should implement AI that can organize and access classified data by understanding how AI works in high-security environments.
He said the department should allow personnel to interact with standard AI platforms to address the misconception that the technology would make critical decisions.
“By allowing people to be directly involved in dictating and monitoring an AI’s responsibilities, they become familiar with the limitations and benefits of AI, making them less distrustful and resistant to the technology,” Badeau noted.
He cited the role of change management in the education process and use of the AI-as-a-service model to help streamline the ATO process.
“Education and authorization need to be a critical piece of DoD’s AI strategy when planning for the next few years. Without AI that can operate at a high-security level, the government is putting the lives of warfighters and citizens at risk,” Badeau wrote.
