The U.S. Navy selected Remus 300 unmanned underwater vehicle for the Lionfish small UUV program in March and Duane Fotheringham, president of unmanned systems at HII Mission Technologies, said the company is adopting an open systems architecture in UUV and autonomy software development to align with the service’s vision of fielding technologies that can plug and play with systems from other companies, Breaking Defense reported Friday.

The Navy has “been now very clear in their communications about how they intend to handle autonomy going forward,” Fotheringham told the publication.

That’s great for industry … where the Navy clearly articulates their vision and their plan… That does inform a lot of our development and how we’re building our autonomy and how we’re building and designing our new vehicles,” he added.

Fotheringham said the service has requested several modifications to the base model of Remus 300 for the Lionfish program and the company is working to combine those changes in a single compartment of the underwater drone.
