The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity has awarded contracts to six lead organizations for the study of artificial intelligence techniques that could advance linguistic fingerprinting technology.

The awardees will participate in the Human Interpretable Attribution of Text Using Underlying Structure program, which aims to create AI technologies capable of multilingual authorship attribution and privacy preservation, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said Tuesday.

The recipients were selected after IARPA issued a broad agency announcement for the HIATUS challenge. The lead organizations are:

  • Charles River Analytics
  • Leidos
  • Raytheon BBN
  • SRI International
  • University of Pennsylvania
  • University of Southern California

IARPA is looking for novel applications that can identify authorship based on word choice, sentence phrasing, data organization and other stylistic features in different languages. It is also in search technologies capable of verifying the attribution of a particular text to a specific author and justifying a linguistic pattern revision to preserve an author’s privacy.

Innovations resulting from the HIATUS program, which has more than 20 companies, nonprofit organizations and academic institutions, could help identify counterintelligence risks and protect the identity of authors of sensitive information, ODNI said.
