L3Harris Technologies and the U.S. Navy have partnered to exhibit during an international maritime warfare exercise in Hawaii the service branch’s Nomad medium-displacement unmanned surface vehicle that is equipped with the defense company’s control systems.
The demonstration of Nomad at the 2022 Rim of the Pacific Exercise will aim to show how the USV can perform various maritime missions with help from autonomous L3Harris technologies for control, electro-optical and communications, the company said Monday.
Through L3Harris systems, Nomad has the option to be remotely controlled from an onshore or ship-based ground control station. The company’s equipment also allows the vehicle to conduct information, surveillance and reconnaissance and other strategic missions safely and efficiently sans onboard staffing.
RIMPAC 2022 is being held at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from June 29 to Aug. 4.
“Lessons learned from this exercise will enable us to continue developing and integrating autonomous capabilities in collaboration with the Naval Sea Systems Command, Unmanned Maritime Systems,” said Rosemary Chapdelaine, president of L3Harris’ maritime business.
