KBR has won a five-year, $207 million task order from the Department of Defense to provide engineering support and testing assistance for a missile defense system.
Under the task order, the defense and space contractor is expected to perform simulated duties such as surveillance, guidance, fire control and engagement decision logic for the Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target missile apparatus, the company said Monday.
“We’re proud to continue [missile engineering] support and to further our shared goal of protecting U.S. forces and allies through enhancing the capabilities of the PATRIOT missile system,” said KBR Government Solutions President Byron Bright, a three-time Wash100 Award winner.
The Houston, Texas-based engineering company has been involved in troubleshooting and preparation services for the PATRIOT missile for over 40 years. Work under the new task order will be conducted at both Redstone Arsenal government facilities and KBR’s Huntsville, Alabama locations.
KBR will also carry out modeled enactments of interceptor flyout, seeker and warhead effectiveness. In addition, the task order awarded under the Department of Defense Information Analysis Center’s multiple-award contract vehicle will see that the company executes studies, analyses, live fire runs, hardware-in-the-loop testing and search, track and flight trial missions.
PATRIOT operates by deflecting attacks from oppositional short- and medium-range tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned air vehicles. It is said to be instrumental in the U.S. federal missile and air defense program.
The task order is issued by the U.S. Air Force’s 774th Enterprise Sourcing Squadron. It contracts KBR to advisory efforts about the missile hardware as well as testing to demonstrate full functionality of the system.
KBR is currently working under another contract with the U.S. Air Force to research and develop an alternate position, navigation and timing system to circumvent environments that disallow global positioning systems. The $49.7 million contract was awarded in September 2021.
