Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google, has encouraged the federal government to draft a policy that actively addresses international cyber threats and fosters cyber innovation considering the previous cybersecurity breaches attributed to hackers from China and Russia, Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

In an interview, Pichai said the increasingly connected world needs international legal standards for cybersecurity. “Governments on a multilateral basis…need to put it up higher on the agenda.”

The Alphabet CEO added that the U.S. needs to technologically outpace China, which seeks to advance artificial intelligence technologies and domestically establish a semiconductor industry.

Google has begun investments in quantum computing to sustain technological advantage over Chinese internet companies. Chinese competitors also provide services across the globe.
