Verizon has partnered with digital infrastructure company Equinix to expand its software-defined interconnect technology and allow global and public sector customers to automatically connect multiprotocol label switching and Ethernet private networks to clouds and other service providers.

The expansion will enable users to obtain fast network services activation at lower access cost and improved networking agility, Verizon said Thursday.

The SDI platform, which is part of the Network-as-a-Service approach of Verizon Business, was originally designed to provide private IP networks to the colocation environment of Equinix.

It will now be able to support Ethernet E-Line and E-LAN wide area networks as the two companies seek to strengthen their capacity to support the digital transformation of enterprises and the public sector amid the pandemic.

“[With the SDI development,] customers can now take advantage of the Equinix Fabric interconnection service and Verizon’s Network-as-a-Service offering to privately and securely connect their digital supply chain ecosystems,” said Bill Long, senior vice president of Equinix’s core product management.

Massimo Peselli, senior vice president of Verizon Business’ global enterprise, noted that organizations need a scalable platform that provides network services through cloud-centric strategies to leverage technologies built on 5G, artificial intelligence and augmented reality and virtual reality.
