Craig Heartwell, chief technology officer at Presidio Federal, said Department of Defense leaders looking to scale and use data in real time for decision making must make sure disparate data aligns with DOD tasks and missions.
He wrote in a blog post Nextgov published Friday that, in connection, the defense data strategy and the department’s cloud computing and cybersecurity efforts are collectively changing how the military performs missions.
“Appropriate application of augmentation techniques can help DOD components and the military services successfully implement the first three essential capabilities and achieve the seven VAULTIS—visible, accessible, understandable, linked, trustworthy, interoperable and secure—goals of the Data Strategy,” Heartwell noted.
He also referenced David Spirk, chief data officer at the Department of Defense and a Wash100 recipient, who said DOD’s data strategy will focus on how data can bolster joint all-domain warfighting.
Heartwell said DOD has a lot of technology opportunities in harnessing data amid complex integration challenges. Continuous delivery, real-time performance and automation will serve as innovation areas as DOD continues to maximize the use of data, he added.
