Booz Allen’s Kevin Coggins: Space Sector Should Adopt Zero Trust to Protect Space-Based Assets

Booz Allen's Kevin Coggins: Space Sector Should Adopt Zero Trust to Protect Space-Based Assets - top government contractors - best government contracting event

Kevin Coggins, vice president for positioning, navigation and timing at Booz Allen Hamilton, said he believes the space industry should implement zero-trust architectures to safeguard space-enabled networks from cyberthreats, Breaking Defense reported Monday.

“The architectures of government systems are inherently trusting,” Coggins said. “If we continue to have these open, trusted links, we’re going to be constantly fighting [the] next threat.”

Experts said concerns over cybersecurity and resiliency in the space domain remain and will continue as the space gets more congested driven by 5G and other technologies.

Sam Visner, a technical fellow at Mitre, said the space rush could result in the creation of a “truly enormous” cyberattack surface as tens of thousands of new space assets are expected to launch within the decade.

Space-based assets, including legacy systems, could be targeted in the future by adversaries as they acquire new capabilities and resources.
