Jennifer Warren, a vice president at Lockheed Martin, said that global partnerships among government, commercial and academic organizations will be key to sustaining operations in the space domain, SpaceNews reported Tuesday.
Warren noted at an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics-hosted online event Tuesday that while both the public and private sectors are pursuing space economy and safety initiatives, the lack of coordinated efforts to standardize practices in that domain could hinder the attainment of sustainability goals.
“And how [do] we get there? I would suggest it’s through not uniquely intergovernmental or uniquely private sector discussions, but through a very robust multistakeholder approach,” she added,
According to Warren, Lockheed has urged satellite operators to support a rating system developed by the World Economic Forum to gauge a mission’s sustainability in relation to debris mitigation and compliance to international guidelines.
The company’s space segment enlisted its satellites as SSR beta testers. “Although it’s voluntary, it’s expected to promote responsible behavior by operators, manufacturers, and launch service providers through that scoring,” Warren said.
