The Department of Homeland Security is seeking information on a capability that can enhance its ability to detect anomalous or malicious activities related to 5G and internet of things devices.
DHS posted a sources sought notice on Thursday for a 5G/IoT Situational Awareness System that builds on technology developed through previous Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs.
The agency explained that smartphones and other 5G devices are “uniquely positioned” to populate the planned SAS platform given their suite of sensors that can detect unhealthy biological activities and suspicious electromagnetic movements.
“Without a 5G/IoT Situational Awareness System, our government and industry will not be able to effectively characterize ‘normal/healthy’ conditions versus ‘suspicious/unhealthy’ environments,” the DHS notice reads.
Qualified companies for DHS’ planned development effort must have a previous SBIR/STTR award with another federal agency.
Responses to the DHS notice are due on July 30.
