Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has launched a new integrated device manufacturing strategy to help the company advance innovation and drive product leadership.
Gelsinger said in a statement published Tuesday the company will use the IDM 2.0 strategy to design and manufacture products in the “best way possible for every category we compete in.â€
IDM 2.0 is composed of three elements: the new Intel Foundry Services business unit, internal factory network and expanded use of third-party foundry capacity.
Randhir Thakur, a semiconductor industry veteran, will serve as senior vice president and president of Intel Foundry Services and directly report to Gelsinger.
For the strategy’s internal factory network component, Intel said it expects to tape in the 7 nanometer compute tile for client CPU, Meteor Lake, in the second quarter of 2021.
Intel also announced plans to invest approximately $20 billion to build two new factories at the Ocotillo campus in Arizona to support the expansion of the company’s manufacturing capacity. The project is expected to generate 15,000 long-term jobs locally, 3,000 high-tech jobs and over 3,000 construction jobs.
The company said it plans to collaborate with IBM to research and develop next-generation logic and packaging technology platforms.
