Lockheed Martin and NEC have agreed to expand their partnership to further advance the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies in spacecraft development programs, including NASA’s Orion vehicle for the Artemis mission.
"The power of AI is leveraged across our entire enterprise, and with a trusted partner like NEC, we gain the resources to expand its abilities at scale across our internal operations," Rick Ambrose, executive vice president at Lockheed’s space business and a 2021 Wash100 Award winner, said in a statement published Monday.
Under the joint collaboration agreement, Lockheed will use NEC’s System Invariant Analysis Technology and integrate SIAT with its Technology for Telemetry Analytics for Universal Artificial Intelligence to facilitate detection of anomalies during the space vehicle development’s design, development and testing phases.
"By proactively analyzing telemetry data we are able to deliver our systems even faster and streamline the work that our employees do every day,†added Ambrose.
NEC’s SIAT analytics engine works to detect inconsistencies and suggest solutions using sensor-based data to understand the behavior of computer systems and other platforms. T-TAURI from Lockheed is a time series analysis framework that could provide a holistic understanding of a platform and create a foundational tool for other technologies when combined with SIAT.
Lockheed said T-TAURI and SIAT helped develop a model of Orion’s normal operations within four hours by establishing more than 22 billion logical relationships for analysis using data from about 150,000 sensors. The models can be applied in monitoring tests of future spacecraft to help speed up analysis.
NEC and Lockheed are also working to finalize a licensing deal that includes a multiyear option.
