Lockheed Martin has commenced preparations to launch a midsize demonstration satellite platform designed for communications, weather research and Earth observation missions, Via Satellite reported Friday.
The company created 10 variants of the refrigerator-sized LM 400 satellite bus with a common architecture.
Rick Ambrose, executive vice president of Lockheed’s space business and a 2021 Wash100 awardee, said the company developed its LM 400 technology in a push to help customers address missions in low-Earth and geostationary orbits.
The bus is intended to work with the software-based SmartSat architecture and the Modular Open Systems Architecture, the report noted.
