Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has entered into an agreement with NASA to continue supporting the agency’s lunar habitation research program through an APL-led consortium.
APL said Friday it will continue work under the Lunar Surface Innovation Initiative, which falls under the Space Technology Mission Directorate's oversight and focuses on developing technologies to support the Artemis moon landing mission as well as human operations on the lunar surface.
NASA awarded APL a task order on an existing contract for up to $30 million over three years.
The lab’s LSII team will extend its operation of the Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium and continue leading engineering and scientific exploration activities involving lunar stimulants and materials design.
APL has prior experience in supporting NASA’s efforts to address research challenges and identify opportunities for sustainable lunar presence.
LSIC has expanded to over 300 companies, nonprofit organizations and universities since its establishment in 2020.
