InterDigital and Shared Spectrum have landed spots on a contract of an undisclosed value to build 5G-based dynamic spectrum sharing technologies for the U.S. Air Force.

The contractors will help Hill Air Force Base's 5G cellular networks and the military service's radar systems conduct dynamic spectrum sharing activities across a 3.1 to 3.45-gigahertz frequency range, InterDigital said Friday.

The dynamic spectrum sharing initiative seeks to make 5G protocol changes, apply new prototype hardware approaches and launch trade research to enhance 5G network and enable spectrum coexistence. Work will also cover the integration and deployment of the technologies into a 5G testbed.

The Department of Defense awarded the contract as part of efforts to experiment and demonstrate 5G technologies within five military installations.

Shared Spectrum is a Vienna, Virginia-based company that offers assured communications, emergency response, spectrum sensing, reallocation and sharing services.

InterDigital is founded in 1992 and provides services in video and wireless communications.
