Brian Dunn, director of strategy and business development for integrated air and missile defense at Lockheed Martin’s missiles and fire control unit, said he believes that high-power microwave technology has the potential to defend against threats from a swarm of unmanned aerial systems, Breaking Defense reported Friday.
Lockheed showcased its Morfius airborne system at the Association of the U.S. Army’s virtual Global Force Next event last week. The reusable interceptor platform is designed to generate an HPM effect in counter-drone scenarios.
“We’re focused on how we address the counter-UAS swarm threat,†Dunn was quoted as saying by Breaking Defense.
He added that a UAS threat defense system should work to defeat its target before the hostile drone enables the ordnance release, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance functions.
Morfius does not weigh more than 30 pounds and can operate with ground and aircraft platforms, according to the report.
