BlackBerry has implemented new updates into an emergency mass notification system in an effort to augment communications between agencies and mitigate unauthorized access to federal government applications, data and systems.

The AtHoc platform will begin to support derived credentials functionality to help government customers authenticate and authorize sensitive information contained in instant messages or notifications, the company said Tuesday.

The addition aligns with an Office of Personnel Management directive to use derived credentials on mobile devices of all federal departments.

BlackBerry has also updated AtHoc to run on Amazon Web Services' GovCloud environment to expand its availability.

The platform has "authority to operate" certifications from the Federal Aviation Administration and the departments of Energy, Homeland Security, Justice, Transportation, Treasury, Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services.

AtHoc also obtained authorization under the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program in 2017 to work with Microsoft's Azure cloud service.
