L3Harris Technologies has partnered with NASA to provide communications link technology for the Perseverance rover starting from its landing on Mars through the rest of the robotic vehicle's 10-year lifespan.
L3Harris said Tuesday it will provide communications systems that will operate with overhead orbiters to relay data between the rover and Earth-based ground stations at a distance of approximately 250 million miles.
The Perseverance team’s controllers will obtain imagery, data and feedback while directing instructions to the rover through L3Harris’ communication links.
Sean Stackley, president of integrated mission systems at L3Harris, said the company’s transmission technology is meant to handle the relay of high-volume Mars imagery as the Perseverance rover operates on the planet's harsh and difficult surface environment.
L3Harris has over two decades of experience collaborating with NASA for Mars exploration missions.
