Robert Smith, former vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin‘s radar and sensor systems unit, has joined BWX Technologies as president of government operations.

Smith will oversee BWXT’s nuclear business lines in the U.S. covering work for government customers that include the Department of Energy, the National Nuclear Security Administration and NASA, the company said Monday.

In his newly created position, he will report directly to BWXT President and CEO Rex Geveden.

“[Smith’s] technical and management credentials and sustained record of success in the aerospace and defense markets demonstrate his value to BWXT as we pursue new avenues of growth and exceptional operational performance,” said Geveden.

Prior to joining BWXT, Smith spent more than 12 years at Lockheed where he also led business areas such as command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; C2 and battle management; and space and cyber.

His career also includes leadership roles at the National Security Agency, Windermere Information Technology Services and Nantero’s government arm.
