Eric Frahm, a program manager at the Defense Innovation Unit, has said modern technology could help the U.S. Air Force to address learning, data and scalability limitations in the service branch's Joint Immersive Training System, GCN reported Wednesday.
DIU and USAF selected Google's cloud business, CAE, Vertex Solutions and Discovery Machine to expand flight training options for Air Education and Training Command by integrating off-the-shelf tools into JTS.
Frahm told GCN in an email that the program will incorporate new learning methods and help instructors utilize simulation technology.
“By eliminating access to training devices as a barrier to training, we can accelerate the pace of learning."
According to Frahm, the JTS team was able to integrate a training device, develop custom software and implement a cloud environment over a three-month period and will apply lessons learned from these efforts to update the system.
Google will provide cloud infrastructure to host JTS training devices and related data as part of an agreement with DIU and USAF.
CAE will work on a learning management technology while Discovery Machine will develop an artificial intelligence-based autonomous flight instruction system.
Vertex Solutions will design software, provide logistical support and facilitate user acceptance tests for the project.
Student pilots use the platform at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph in Texas and Vance AF Base in Oklahoma.
