Huntington Ingalls Industries has officially transferred custody of a new Legend-class national security cutter to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Dubbed NSC 9, USCGC Stone (WMSL 758) is the Coast Guard's ninth Legend-class ship and the first vessel named in honor of late Cmdr. Elmer Fowler Stone, HII said Tuesday.

Stone can operate up to 60 days and reach a distance of 12K miles at travel speeds of 28 knots.

The vessel is also built to ferry 120 personnel and carry out marine safety, law enforcement, national defense, environmental protection, maritime and homeland security operations.

Stone will depart from HII's shipyard to its homeport in Charleston, South Carolina, at the end of 2020.
