Raytheon Technologies plans to submit its concept for an enterprise system based on cloud computing and artificial intelligence as part of its bid for the Federal Aviation Administration’s updated aviation network.

The FAA seeks to modernize its current network infrastructure and execute a “total overhaul” of the system to better support operations including telecommunications and air traffic management, Raytheon said Thursday.

As part of the FAA Enterprise Network Services Program, Raytheon’s Collins Aerospace and Intelligence & Space businesses partnered to develop a cloud-based enterprise network that utilizes automation, AI and machine learning.

The updated FAA system is envisioned to support National Airspace System functions including radar operations, air and ground control, flight services and voice communications, according to Raytheon.

Gene Hayman, director of government programs for Collins Aerospace's information management services segment, said that modernizing the FAA network will support “a more data-centric connected ecosystem” as well as simplified technology integration.

Nicole Gates, FENS capture manager at RI&S, noted that standardized network tools will enable operators to better leverage data and execute decisions in real-time.

Raytheon's announcement builds on Collins Aerospace’s prior work managing the ARINC Global Network. The latter will provide information technology management and network services as part of the FENS effort.
