A team comprised of Navatek and the University of South Carolina secured a $9.2M contract to build digital-twin prototypes that could help the U.S. Navy the performance of a ship's power and energy systems, C4ISRNET reported Saturday.
Thomas Fu, director of ONR's mission capable, persistent and survivable naval platforms department, told the publication that the office seeks to better manage control systems and forecast electrical problems through the new virtual replication method.
The Navatek-UofSC partnership will also conduct machine learning and modeling research efforts and create hardware and software for digital twin tests.
The company hired 10 engineering and scientific professionals in anticipation of the contract award, according to the university.
