The National Institutes of Health has entered into an agreement with Premier to license the latter’s healthcare database to support COVID-19 research initiatives.

Premier said Thursday the agreement enables the Critical Care Medicine Department within NIH’s Clinical Center to access the Premier Healthcare Database and conduct research on the disease’s impact on patients across the U.S.

PHD contains microbiology and discharge data on over 1B inpatient and outpatient encounters in 800 hospitals across the U.S. NIH researchers are working to use this data to analyze patterns in demographics, diagnostics, clinical characteristics, billed services, medications and treatments, laboratory tests and secondary infections.

Denise Juliano, group vice president for Premier's applied sciences research segment, said the company is committed to helping NIH leverage PHD to generate insights into COVID-19 progression and impact.

Premier Applied Sciences previously released a white paper on PHD elements and their applications in COVID-19 data analysis.
