L3Harris Technologies led a team composed of Maker“™s Edge Makerspace, Baylor University and select physicians from California and Texas to develop a ventilation system that will work to assist patients that have tested positive for COVID-19.
The Innovative Inspiratory Ideas breather has been created after a five-day agile sprint design process and can be manufactured through commercial off-the-shelf parts, the company said Friday.
McLennan Community College performed simulated compromised lung tests and assisted in ventilator calibration, while Maker“™s Edge Makerspace and Baylor University provided additional 3D printers in line with the prototype.
“I am extremely proud and inspired by the i3 Breather team“™s ability to develop a life-saving solution for a critical public health need in just three weeks,“ said Sean Stackley, president at L3Harris“™ integrated mission systems business and a former Wash100 awardee.
The i3 breather was selected along with four other prototypes under the government“™s Hack-A-Vent Innovation Challenge, a competition that sought to obtain low-cost mechanical ventilation support systems.
The Food and Drug Administration has started Emergency Use Authorization tests for the five prototypes.
