L3Harris Technologies led a team composed of Maker’s Edge Makerspace, Baylor University and select physicians from California and Texas to develop a ventilation system that will work to assist patients that have tested positive for COVID-19.
The Innovative Inspiratory Ideas breather has been created after a five-day agile sprint design process and can be manufactured through commercial off-the-shelf parts, the company said Friday.
McLennan Community College performed simulated compromised lung tests and assisted in ventilator calibration, while Maker’s Edge Makerspace and Baylor University provided additional 3D printers in line with the prototype.
“I am extremely proud and inspired by the i3 Breather team’s ability to develop a life-saving solution for a critical public health need in just three weeks,†said Sean Stackley, president at L3Harris’ integrated mission systems business and a former Wash100 awardee.
The i3 breather was selected along with four other prototypes under the government’s Hack-A-Vent Innovation Challenge, a competition that sought to obtain low-cost mechanical ventilation support systems.
The Food and Drug Administration has started Emergency Use Authorization tests for the five prototypes.
