Keith Johnson, vice president and general manager for federal at cloud and data analytics firm Spire Global, has said that the company received Department of Defense funding to develop an automated shipping route identification system.

Johnson wrote in a blog post published Wednesday that Spire is working to create a dashboard for an automatic identification system to support real-time prediction of vessel traffic in line with weather forecasts.

Various DoD entities use the automated technology to establish projected shipping routes eight hours ahead of the trip, he said.

Spire has also supported the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s pilot program focused on integrating remote-sensing data with numerical weather prediction models, according to Johnson.

Previously, the company secured a blanket purchase agreement with NOAA to produce a “radio occultation” forecasting database, which has supported other agencies like NASA and the U.S. Air Force.

Other Spire efforts that Johnson cited include its provision of air traffic management technologies to the Federal Aviation Administration and its delivery of automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast data to support aircraft trend monitoring efforts at the Naval Postgraduate School.
