Lockheed Martin has awarded BAE Systems a contract to design and produce an infrared seeker technology for a weapon system used to defend against ballistic missile threats.

The next seeker for Lockheed's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense platform will be designed to increase the performance and manufacturability of THAAD to counter more threats, BAE said Tuesday.

THAAD uses kinetic force to intercept adversarial missiles during the terminal flight phase and supports the Missile Defense Agency mission.

BAE noted it will perform design work on the new missile seeker in Huntsville, Ala., with the company planning to add a facility and hire engineers to work there.

Assembly, integration and testing efforts will take place at facilities located in New Hampshire and New York.

The company added its missile defense seeker production experience spans over 40 years and it has provided more than 500 seekers for the THAAD program to date.
