Northrop Grumman broke ground Thursday on the site of a planned expansion for the company’s Arizona-based satellite engineering and manufacturing facility.

The expansion will extend the Gilbert Campus site’s satellite factory by 100K square feet and will add a two-story, 120K-square-foot building to the administrative and engineering area, Northrop said Friday.

The firm intends to use the new facilities to address satellite requirements from the Department of Defense, NASA and other clients and potentially achieve business growth objectives.

Frank DeMauro, vice president and general manager at Northrop’s tactical space systems business, said the expansion will yield additional full-time jobs in the Arizona area.

The Gilbert Campus site manufactured satellites for U.S. and international clients and is currently building the Joint Polar Satellite System and NASA’s Landsat 9 Earth observation platform.
