Chris Hill and Zachary LaCelle of Mitre told Federal News Network in an interview published Friday about the nonprofit corporation’s new laboratory that is focused on mobile autonomous platforms.

When asked about the research focus, LaCelle, lead engineer at Mitre, said the new lab is looking at sensor data and other types of information used by autonomous vehicles and is exploring which data is important for vehicle safety.

Hill, director of transportation at Mitre, said the new lab is looking to support several agencies, including the departments of Defense and Homeland Security, as it explores the impacts of vehicle autonomy.

The Department of Transportation has come up with guidance, AV 4.0, on autonomous vehicle development and Hill said the creation of a guiding safety framework to advance that effort is one area where the lab can offer support.

LaCelle noted that Mitre sees the lab as a continuing resource.

“We really see this capability as continuing and updating as technology and algorithms improve,” LaCelle said of the new lab. “We’re looking at doing some research on safety standards and certification processes, and we hope to have results for that soon."
