Northrop Grumman has tested a new infrared countermeasure system in a free flight missile trial for the U.S. Army.

The company said Tuesday its Common Infrared Countermeasure system defended against single- and multiple-shot infrared attacks at White Sands Missile Range. CIRCM performed from an aircraft attached to an aerial cable.

The lightweight system generates laser energy to protect equipped aircraft from infrared attacks. The technology’s open architecture allows for integration with other systems to accommodate various needs.

“CIRCM has undergone thousands of hours of testing to verify its performance in a range of realistic combat scenarios,” said Bob Gough, vice president of land and avionics command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance at Northrop Grumman.

The test marks a milestone necessary for Northrop to pursue the CIRCM systems full-rate production.
