HPE to Support National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s AI Research

Hewlett Packard Enterprise will be collaborating with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory study the use of artificial intelligence in high-performance computing.

The effort aims to address the operational needs of the HPC data center within NREL’s energy systems integration facility, the government laboratory said Monday.

HPC systems can use modeling functions of AI and machine learning to process historical and real-time data at exascale performance rates.

Steve Hammond, director of NREL’s Computational Science Center, said HPC data centers require automation to keep up with the growth of exascale computing.

“HPE’s Advanced Technology Group has conducted comprehensive research on exascale monitoring and management for HPC systems," said Kris Munch, data analysis and visualization group manager at NREL.

“Our research collaboration will span the areas of data management, data analytics and AI/ML optimization for both manual and autonomous intervention in data center operations,” he added.

Previous HPE-NREL collaborations include work on the Peregrine and Eagle HPC systems. HPE started developing the Eagle supercomputer NREL in May last year and finished in January.
