General Atomics’ electromagnetic systems business has secured a contract of undisclosed value from the U.S. Army to deliver a hydrogen generation system that will help refuel hydrogen vehicles in deployment.
Scope of work will also cover the design, fabrication and assessment of a prototype mobile system that will work to generate high-pressure hydrogen, the company said Thursday.
The planned system will yield hydrogen through a reaction between a dry aluminum alloy and water and will utilize local sources of water.
“With a battlefield-based hydrogen fueling station, the Army can improve vehicle range, improve efficiency, and reduce dependency on oil and the logistical burden that is associated with it,†said Scott Forney, president of General Atomics’ electromagnetic systems business.
