Steve Harris, senior vice president and general manager of Dell EMC’s federal business and a 2019 Wash100 awardee, wrote in a commentary published Tuesday on Federal News Network that there are several factors agencies should consider as they adopt a multicloud approach and one is the transparency and flexibility multicloud brings to agencies.

“An agency can granularly choose how to handle each workload—but has the flexibility to easily change how data sets and workloads are stored and used if necessary,” he said. “The flexibility and transparency of a multi-cloud environment helps to avoid vendor lock-in.”

Harris said multicloud balances cybersecurity concerns by enabling agencies to choose the level of security and right environment for each workload.

“In a multi-cloud environment, sensitive citizen information can stay on-prem, but public-facing information can still be hosted off premises,” he added.

He also mentioned that multicloud platforms could help federal agencies reduce technical debt and improve the effectiveness of warfighters and citizens.
