Raytheon Seeks to Support Dismounted Troops With Virtual Training Tech

Raytheon has developed a technology designed to meet the U.S. Army’s need for a virtual training platform for dismounted warfighters, Fox News reported Tuesday.

The company’s Synthetic Training Environment Soldier Virtual Trainer is a mobile platform equipped with a virtual reality headset, several computers and software and uses commercial technology to home in on targets, track dismounted troops and launch artillery fire.

Harry Buhl, business development manager for Raytheon’s intelligence, information and services business, said the STE SVT system is designed to help ground-based joint tactical air controllers to identify GPS coordinates for hostile aircraft and uses graphical displays to put the troops and weapons systems in a multidomain battlefield environment, which includes helicopter drones, tanks and fighter aircraft.

“This is designed for ‘dismounts’ in a complex modern environment,” Buhl said of STE SVT. “You can now be in that environment with them and do air-ground integration, dismounted and mounted integration. Virtual training, in a dismounted operational environment, enables us to bridge the gap.”

The report said the STE SVT system is one of the industry efforts that seek to reflect the virtual warfare dynamics in the service branch’s “Unified Challenge Simulation Experiment” conducted in August.
