Parsons Concludes Design Test of Savannah Salt Waste Processing Facility

Parsons has tested and verified the design capacity performance of the Savannah River Site’s salt waste processing facility under a project with the Department of Energy.

The company said Monday it concluded the test on Sept. 30 and determined that with the SWPF, the site will be able to process a minimum of 7.3M gallons yearly.

This test builds on over 15 years of integrated preparation activities at the site’s SWPF. Parsons used standard procedures, simulated chemicals, radiological controls and laboratory functions throughout the test.

“The facility ran at full capacity during the test period without any major issues and performed exactly as it was designed," said Frank Sheppard, senior vice president and SWPF project manager at Parsons.

Once greenlit for operations, the facility will work to process Savannah River Site’s radioactive salt waste at a rate 10 times faster than current systems.
