Northrop Picks Student Cohort Under STEM Employment Initiative in San Diego

Northrop Grumman has teamed up with Palomar College and MiraCosta College to launch an initiative that will help science, technology, engineering and mathematics students in San Diego secure paid opportunities in defense and aerospace industries.

Northrop said Wednesday it has selected a pool of students to serve as part-time engineering technicians and assistants at San Diego Autonomous Design Center of Excellence.

The students were chosen through an interview and application process and are eligible to receive credits for their respective schools. In addition, the program will allow the participants to obtain a background in software engineering, systems integration, payloads and electronics.

“Our decision to develop a community college pilot fills a critical gap bridging K-12 and university programming, allowing us to reach and engage students in San Diego throughout their education journey,” said Alfredo Ramirez, vice president of engineering at Northrop.

The company plans to secure additional partnerships for school year 2020 through 2021 via the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community College Association.
