The U.S. Army has chosen Leonardo DRS to provide the company’s on-board vehicle power offering and integrate the system into the service branch’s prototype mobile command post platforms.
The OBVP system will enable command post integrated infrastructure platforms to directly access electrical power from an expeditionary vehicle’s power train, the company said Tuesday.
Leonardo DRS and power systems manufacturer Allison Transmission will jointly deliver the OBVP platform, which is based on the Allison 3200 transmission and designed to support missile systems, directed-energy technology and high-energy lasers.
Bill Guyan, senior vice president and general manager at Leonardo DRS’ land electronics segment, said the company’s partnership with Allison Transmission is aimed at addressing the Army’s power gap issues as well as emerging multidomain operational needs.
Leonardo DRS began OBVP development in 2008 and has since completed testing and integration of the system onto the Army's tactical vehicles, including the Stryker, family of medium tactical vehicles and high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles.
