FireEye held its 10th Annual Cyber Defense Summit on Oct. 9th and 10th at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. The summit brought together many of the world’s leading security experts, frontline heroes, government leaders and executives from various industries to address the challenges of today’s threat landscape.

CISA Director and fellow 2019 Wash100 Award winner Christopher Krebs, U.S. Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, commander of the U.S. Cyber Command, director of the National Security Agency and 2019 Wash100 Award recipient were featured as keynote speakers for the summit.

However, it was Kevin Mandia, FireEye’s chief executive officer and board director, who made some of the strongest statements of the summit. More specifically, Mandia made the following statements regarding cyber defense and the challenges that we’re facing in the cyberspace sector:

  • There are uncertain rules of engagement
  • There’s an escalating hum of cyber conflict
  • We are currently facing an invasion of our privacy
  • Security breaches are growing more impactful
  • A conflict of authenticity and disinformation
  • There will always be a security gap that can be exploited
  • We can solve these issues together.

In addition, Mandia explained that we are learning that there are few risks or repercussions for the attackers and they continue to exploit human trust. He also mentioned that cyber attackers reflect geopolitical conditions, cryptocurrency is changing the game and CEOs are effectively curious how good their cyber security needs to be for the future. He emphasized that while there are concerns, there’s also progress being made and crucial lessons are being learned.

FireEye’s 10th Annual Cyber Defense Summit featured over 50 speakers in more than 30 sessions across three breakout tracks – Executive, Technical and Solutions.
